Sir David Davis responds to BAE’s announcement of 400 job losses in Brough

Today BAE Systems announced, as part of a statement on a proposed restructuring of the business, that some 1,915 jobs are at risk, including 400 jobs at their Brough site.

Responding to the announcement, Sir David Davis said:

“It is disappointing to learn that BAE systems are considering job reductions among the highly skilled and dedicated staff at Brough. As a significant employer in the region BAE has obligations to the community, and any job losses are deeply regrettable.

However, it is important to note that these are only proposed redundancies. The Government will be working with the company, and the trade unions, to mitigate the impact of this announcement and is reviewing what support can be offered at this time, and I will be speaking with the Minister about this matter later today.

It is vital that job losses at Brough do not take this site below the critical size needed to ensure its ongoing viability. I have been given reassurances in the past by BAE that the company’s intention for Brough is to create a stable and viable workforce that is not over reliant on Hawk contracts alone, and I hope that BAE will continue to support this aim in the future.

My thoughts go out to all employees and their families dealing with the uncertainly that this announcement has caused.”
