Government faces largest rebellion since 2010 over “caravan tax”
The government faced its largest rebellion since the tuition fees vote in 2010, over plans to end the zero-rated tax status of static caravans. Local East Yorkshire MPs- including David- have made clear their opposition to the measure, first planned in the recent budget. It is feared that it will lead to large job losses in the region.
David appeared on a number of news programmes to press the case against the “tax”, including BBC’s Look North– on which he pointed out that the employment situation in East Yorkshire was such that many of those who would be made unemployed by the tax would struggle to find new jobs.
Although the amendment- tabled by local MPs- to retain zero-rating was narrowly defeated by 295 votes to 260, the scale of the rebellion was surprising.
