Hull Daily Mail report David’s vote against cuts to child benefits

Haltemprice and Howden MP David Davis has voted against proposed cuts to child benefits.

Mr Davis was the first MP to object to the plan to award child benefit based on the individual income of the mother or father rather than the family when it was first put forward by ministers in 2010.

Despite the proposed top rate of £40,000 being raised to £50,000, Mr Davis maintained his view that the proposals were unfair and voted against the Government.

Mr Davis said “I am entirely in favour of restricting child benefits for the well-off but the actual practice that was being proposed was unwise. “If you are carrying out a programme of cuts you have got to do things that are both fair and seen to be fair.”
