David Davis meets Government Flood Envoy to discuss Humber flood defence strategy

Sir David Davis met with the Government’s Flood Envoy, Robert Goodwill, and other Humber MPs yesterday to discuss the billion pound Humber Flood Risk Management Strategy. Speaking after the meeting Mr Davis said:

“This was a constructive meeting and allowed us to place detailed plans for the future of the Humber’s defences before the government. If delivered, these plans would give the whole of the Humber Estuary protection from the risk posed by serious events like the tidal surge last December.

Fully implementing this strategy is vital to protecting thousands of homes and jobs as well as millions of pounds of future investment. There is over £32billion at risk if we do nothing.

At risk in this context does not mean that something might happen: it means that in the next 50 years something will happen.

The local councils and the Environment Agency have produced a very strong economic case and thorough plans for the Updated Humber Strategy, which the Treasury will now consider in the run up to the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement in December.”
