“David Davis MP says ambulance staff would be “irresponsible” if they voted for strike action.

On Monday, the union Unite announced it would begin balloting 450 paramedics and staff workers at Yorkshire Ambulance Service for strike action, after it was “de-recognised” by bosses.

But Mr Davis, the MP for Haltemprice and Howden, has urged staff to think twice.

In a statement issued this lunchtime, he said: “A decision by Yorkshire Ambulance Service workers to strike would be irresponsible. This is a tough time for everyone. We are all facing economic challenges and are having to make less go further.

“Ambulance services are assessed against three standards for their response times, and they should perform above all three standards. The most recent data shows YAS is only meeting two of the three standards. This is unacceptable.

“What we should be doing is working together to make the service meet the proper standards, and not taking action that threatens those standards.

“The union would be irresponsible to continue on this course, and despite assurances, it would put lives at risk”.
